2021 VITA Marketing Toolkit

This EITC Awareness Day, Oweesta is sharing a VITA Marketing Toolkit to support Native VITA sites in their outreach efforts. Every year in Indian Country, millions of Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) dollars go unclaimed. Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) locations provide a much needed and reliable service to their communities; use the VITA Marketing Toolkit to raise awareness about your tax preparation site.

The Toolkit includes a variety of customizable Native-themed VITA flyers, site business cards, social media graphics, and a black-and-white option for newspaper advertising.

Free tax preparation sites have volunteers trained by the Internal Revenue Service who can help their communities maximize their tax refund. Families who earned less than $50,594 in 2020 could qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and get up to $6,660 depending upon income and number of qualifying children. Even if you’re not hosting a VITA location this year, help spread the word about free tax preparation services by sharing the Toolkit with your network or on your social media channels. VITA locations can be found by using this locator tool:  https://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/

If you require special modifications of the VITA marketing materials, please contact us at comms@oweesta.org with your request.

Additional Resources from ONAC

To support VITA efforts this tax season, Oklahoma Native Assets Coalition, Inc. (ONAC) has compiled several resources for Native VITA site coordinators and advocates, including:
  • Recently publishing a handout with information provided by Native VITA sites regarding how they delivered remote and/or socially distanced VITA services during the 2020 tax season and shutdowns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Information on free tax filing on their website.
  • Free training and technical assistance for tribes and Native-led nonprofits interested in designing and administering Individual Development Account (IDA) programs, Children’s Savings Account, financial education, Emergency Savings Account, Emergency Cash Assistance, Financial Coaching, and Bank On programs.  To access these services, email Christy Finsel, ONAC Executive Director, at cfinsel@oknativeassets.org.
  • Offering three types of free financial coaching to tribal citizens across the United States: 1) credit counseling; 2) homebuyer education; and 3) financial management (i.e. budgeting). Register here for free ONAC financial coaching services from a Native certified financial coach.
